Esther Ang’awa is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with practice experience spanning six years of providing legal advisory and representation in public and private law, as well as advising State and non-State actors on law, constitutionalism and governance.

As a litigation Counsel, Ang’awa has been part of highly consequential public interest litigations in Kenya. The most recent being the successful legal challenge before the High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court of Kenya against the Building Bridges Initiative – a constitutional amendment initiative started by the President of the Republic of Kenya in 2018.

Esther Ang'awa

Advocate of the High Court of Kenya

Esther Ang’awa is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with practice experience spanning six years of providing legal advisory and representation in public and private law, as well as advising State and non-State actors on law, constitutionalism and governance. She runs her practice through her law firm – Angawa & Company Advocates, with focus on public interest litigation, policy advisory, legislative drafting, and representation of vulnerable groups like women and children. As a litigation Counsel, Ang’awa has been part of highly consequential public interest litigations in Kenya. The most recent being the successful legal challenge before the High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court of Kenya against the Building Bridges Initiative – a constitutional amendment initiative started by the President of the Republic of Kenya in 2018 which sought to amend the Constitution of Kenya.

Elective Leadership

Esther Ang’awa was elected as a Council Member of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) in February, 2020 and served from 2020 to 2022 during a most difficult pandemic period. During her tenure, LSK played a prominent role in monitoring legislation before Kenya’s Parliament, holding the Government of Kenya accountable, and pushing back on attempts to subvert the rule of law by the Executive. At the same time, LSK advised the Judiciary on justice administration in the country and pushed for reforms that aided a rapid adaptation of technology by the Judiciary in lodging of cases and conducting of virtual proceedings during the Covid-19 pandemic.

While serving as Council Member at LSK, Ang’awa chaired the LSK’s Committee on Continuous Professional Development, Information, Communication & Technology Committee and Immigration Committee, and was a member of the Gender Committee. Prior to serving as a Council Member of the Law Society of Kenya, Ang’awa had served as the Treasurer of the local Chapter of the Law Society of Kenya in Migori County.

Appointive Leadership

Ang’awa was appointed by Kenya’s Chief Justice (Retired) David Maraga to the Judiciary’s E-Filing Committee in July 2020, representing members of the Bar and the public in review of the newly established E-Filing system and providing recommendations on its improvement.

Ang’awa serves in the Gender Technical Working Group for Migori County at the invitation of the Director of Gender, State Department of Gender, Migori County. She provides legal advice to the office of the Director, the Gender Technical Working Group and other State and Non-State actors working on gender related issues in Migori County. Ang’awa was feted in 2021 by the State Department of Gender for her work and contribution in reduction of Gender Based Violence in Migori County.

Ang’awa currently sits on the Board of Management of Kadika Girls Secondary School and Sori Secondary School in Migori County on appointment by the County Education Board Migori County, State Department of Early Learning and Basic Education.

Education and Training

Esther Ang’awa holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi and is writing her thesis for conferment of a Master of Laws degree from the same university. She also holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Law from Kenya School of Law.

Ang’awa is trained in International Commercial Arbitration (University of Nairobi), Trial Advocacy (Trial Advocacy Training Institute and Justice Advocacy Africa), and Certified Public Accounting (Kenya Accounting Studies National Examinations Board).

Ang’awa is an alumna of East Africa’s Regional Learning Centre for Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) – an initiative of former U.S President Barack Obama to equip promising youth with leadership skills to address the challenges facing the world, especially Africa.

Interests

Ang’awa is passionate about raising legal awareness in the society. She runs a legal aid program in Migori County in Kenya where she conducts pro bono legal aid clinics in villages across the County’s eight Parliamentary Constituencies, provides legal support to several civil society organizations, Members of County Assembly and the County Government of Migori.

In her free time, she loves to sing and listen to music.

Legal Aid

Ang’awa runs a legal aid program in Migori County in Kenya where she conducts pro bono legal aid clinics in villages across eight Parliamentary Constituencies, provides legal support to several civil society organisations, Members of County Assemblies and the County Government of Migori.

Ang’awa advises and collaborates with team members of the Gender Working Group for Migori County and the State Department of Gender, Ministry of Public Service and Gender on gender related matters within Migori County in Kenya. These include efforts against female genital mutilation (FGM), child marriages, sexual and gender based violence, sexual offences, disinheritance of widows, amongst others. In 2021, she was feted by the State Department of Gender for her work and contribution in reduction of Gender Based Violence in Migori County.

She also facilitates placement of victims of sexual and gender-based violence in witness protection by Kenya’s Witness Protection Agency.
